Theme Thursday - Linear

So composition is something that I struggle with. This challenge was no exception. I am such a non-artistic person when it comes to my photos that I rarely see the potential in the subjects I am shooting. But here's my attempt for the week.

#1 - My other obsession, Pens. I love them, truly love them. Its not healthy really. I was playing at my desk at work with a sampling of favorites.

My Pens, My Obsession

Of course after I took this it looks more circular than linear.

#2 - Shot at the lake. I was attempting to get the line where the trees meet the lake along with the lines of the dock.

Lake

Its quite boring.

3. Same lake, different view. This one I caught a boat towing other boats back to the dock. This picture was taken crooked so I straightened it so that the lake line was straight.

Lake Tow

Boring again.

My composition needs some help. What would have made these better?

I love that first shot. It really is eye candy and draws me in. The color, the shapes - all of it.

As for lake shots, I feel ya. Mine are usually blah blah. I once read that water/lake shots can be 'more exciting' if shot at eye level - as in shooting at the same water level. Which I think just means getting a different perspective. Having said that, I need to try that too.

Cool shots again Pen freak. :)

I love the pens - the colors - the circle of lines. And I love taking photos of water - when I went through my pics last night looking for lines - I can't tell you how many were of water falling over rocks from the river to the beach.

I don't think your water shots are boring at all and I love the pen shot. Very creative, colorful, and fun.

I love the pen shot, especially the way the nibs almost seem to form their own inner circle - I'd love to see a closer crop, I bet that optical illusion would really pop.

For the water shot I was going to suggest trying eye level too, but with more of the dock in the foreground. Maybe try lying down on the dock and then focus on the lines of the dock itself as they stream off towards the horizon, with the water more implied rather than shown in clear focus. Of course you'd lose some of the beauty of the setting itself this way, it depends on what you're going for :).

ooh, i like that pen shot -- the lines draw you right into the center. love the colors, too!

The pen shot it totally neat. It's hard not to like pens when they come in so many different colors, textures, and styles buying a new one is sometimes a real treat. :)

The lake shots are pretty. Maybe a closer shot of the trees and the waterline either early morning or at twilight to add different light to the shot.

I really like the pen shot - very linear and good composition of your obsession. :0

As for composition on the lake, moving your perspective would add some interest. Here everything is in focus, so adding some bokeh would add some interest. I think it would be hard to get some really fun shots. It is very pretty scenicly, though!

Like everyone else, I think that first shot is totally awesome! I also must confess that I too have a deep and long standing love of pens.

I think that the lake shots are pretty, but I don't know that there is much that you could really do to change them. I think that when you are shooting from a distance (like across the lake) that your options are pretty limited. I think that most of the 'artsy' type of composition is done from a fairly short distance.
